The Institute of Textile Technology (ITA) of RWTH Aachen University is associated with the department of Textile Engineering and is headed by Professor Thomas Gries. ITA is a part of the faculty of Mechanical Engineering of the RWTH. ITA is responsible for the textile-related curriculum of the ‘Plastics and Textile Technology’ discipline of study in various Bachelor's and Master's degrees in mechanical engineering at the RWTH Aachen. The NRW Special Professorship "Biohybrid & Medical Textiles" by Professor Stefan Jockenhövel acts as a bridge between ITA and the medical faculty.

100 research assistants work at ITA in the field of materials, production processes and products for technical applications of textile structures. ITA GmbH with 24 employees acts as a technology transfer company for the ITA Group since 14 years. ITA GmbH is a partner for industries in the field of research and development.

ITA and ITA GmbH are located in the RWTH Campus Melaten surrounded by other world-renowned research partners from the fields of plastics processing, production and laser technology, automotive technology, interactive materials and polymer chemistry, physics and medicine and architecture / civil engineering. Immediate neighbors are the Fraunhofer Institutes for Produktionstechnololgie (IPT), Laser Technology (ILT) and molecular biology (IME) The interdisciplinary nature of our relations with these research partners on the ground is reflected in the diverse qualifications of ITA’s academic staff.

 

Infrastructure and Facilities​

The Institut für Textiltechnik has a fully equipped technology center with about 250 textile machines and test benches across all textile process stages from the spinning until joining. Furthermore, different laboratories (textile testing, polymer analysis) and workshops are staffed with professionals (mechanics, electronic software and hardware).
